NT Letter to parents relay recess.jpg

RELAY RECESS

Dear Parents,

North Terrace is participating in the American Cancer Society awareness and fundraising event Relay Recess on May 22, 2012. Your child has an opportunity to participate in an all day wellness based school-wide activity as well as raise money towards the fight against cancer. We are inviting all parents and families to attend this event during the school day as it will take the place of our spring Open House. You, your child, and North Terrace Elementary School have an opportunity to make a difference in the fight against cancer. During Relay Recess, students will be engaged in activities that emphasize nutrition, physical activity, sun safety, and tobacco prevention. An estimated one out of every three cancers in the United States is linked to excess body weight, poor nutrition, or physical inactivity. In addition to that statistic, the reality is that most children today have had a loved one who has been touch by cancer. The American Cancer Society offers you and our school the ability to make an impact on these issues by increasing awareness of healthy lifestyles along with giving children the ability to fundraise for cancer programs, services, and research. We will honor cancer survivors at Relay Recess. If you know a survivor who would like to attend, please have them RSVP by contacting Cathy Johnston at rflvista@gmail.com . We will have a friendly Relay Recess fundraising competition between the classes at North Terrace. Each classroom will collect dimes in water bottles from May 8 until our event on May 22. The class that collects the most money in dimes will receive a pizza party. We are also giving each student the opportunity to collect donations as part of their participation in Relay Recess. This is completely voluntary.

Each student will provided a donation envelope, and our Relay Recess fundraising program will run from May 8 to May 22. Every student that raises a minimum of $10 will receive a Relay For Life pencil and bookmark. Every child who collects $100 in donations will receive a Relay Recess t-shirt which they can wear as a badge of honor for their contribution in the fight against cancer. In addition, our school will receive incentives in the form of school supplies based on our total amount raised.

Relay Recess activities will take place during the school day on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. If you would like to be a parent volunteer for Relay Recess, please contact northterracepto@yahoo.com. We will have a parent information meeting on Tues., May 15, 2012 at 3:45 p.m. in the multipurpose room at North Terrace. The American Cancer Society is excited to have our school participate in this life changing fundraiser. The money raised through our efforts allows them to continue their work in providing research, education, advocacy, and services and programs to cancer patients and their families.

Thank you for supporting your child in creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Your child will bring home more information and the donation envelope next week.

State Honors North Terrace as Distinguished School Again!

distingbanner3.jpgFor the third time, North Terrace Elementary School has been named a California Distinguished School.  State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson made the announcement today.  Fellow OUSD school, Palmquist Elementary, was also bestowed with the prestigious honor.

Only 387 of the more than 5,500 public elementary schools in the state were recognized as “distinguished.”  North Terrace also won the award in 2004 and 2000, joining Palmquist and South Oceanside Elementary as the district’s only schools to ever win the award three times.

To be invited to apply for this award, schools must meet a variety of eligibility requirements, including designated federal and state accountability measures based on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the state’s Academic Performance Index (API).

Way to go North Terrace staff and students!

North Terrace Elementary Upcoming Changes for the 2012-2013 School Year

In the fall of 2012, North Terrace Elementary will return to our original site.  The new facility is absolutely beautiful!

There are many changes coming to our school next year.  First of all, we will become an early start campus.  Our class hours will now be 8:15 a.m. until 2:55 p.m.

The School Board has decided that the three base elementary schools (North Terrace, Stuart Mesa and Santa Margarita) will be adding sixth grade classes to their sites in the fall.  Parents of fifth grade students choosing to attend North Terrace for sixth grade may register in our school office.

In addition, North Terrace will provide a full-day Kindergarten program.  Schedules for full-day Kindergarten will be similar to the 1st-6th grade schedule.  Minor adjustments will be made in order to allow smooth transitions during Kindergarten arrival and dismissal times.

We are excited about the new changes for North Terrace Elementary and we are looking forward to an exciting 2012-2013 school year!

If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 760 901-7500.

New District Calendar for Start of 2013-14 School Year

Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, the first day of class for all OUSD students will be Tuesday, August 20, 2013.  The slightly earlier start date is a result of a new district-wide calendar unanimously approved by the OUSD Board of Education.  The change was made during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, March 13, 2012.

school_calendar.jpgOther minor changes regarding the revised calendar beginning in 2013-14 include a shorter Thanksgiving Week holiday and an end to the first semester at the winter break (December 20, 2013).  The last day of instruction for students will be June 4, 2014.

The district asks that all OUSD families please take note of these changes in order to plan accordingly for the start of school in August 2013.  For questions regarding the calendar change, please call 760-966-4008.
